Isaac knew something was wrong the second he entered the condo. Aubrey let out a gasp as her hand fluttered to her mouth.

He stepped in beside her and pushed the door open even more. The place had clearly been tossed. Cushions from the couch were on the floor. Kitchen cupboards were flung open. Canisters had no lids. Every possible place a thumb drive might have been hidden had been searched. That had to be why this had happened. Maybe after their first hotel room had been searched, maybe before. He was sure he would find a similar scene in the bathroom and bedroom.

“I don’t know why I expected anything different.” Aubrey turned toward Isaac, and he wrapped his arm across her back. “He must have found out where I live pretty fast. It’s clear I wouldn’t have been safe here.”

“We can’t go inside. I’ll notify the local police of a break-in and let them know it might be connected to a bigger case. Their crime scene people will pass any relevant evidence on to us.”

He guided her back outside, taking the time to look at the lock to see if there was any sign of a break-in. Some scratches were visible on the metal. Could be evidence of lock picking.

Aubrey ran her hands through her hair. “My sister has a key.” She shook her head as her gaze darted around. “I’m sorry I said that. It’s important that I think the best of her, but I can’t let go of the idea that she’s gotten herself involved with some sinister people.” Her voice faltered, indicating how upset she was.

Feeling protective of her, Isaac gathered her into his arms. He held her close, taking in the fragrant scent of her perfume. He glanced around at the quiet neighborhood. The attacker knew where Aubrey lived. There was a chance he had hired someone to watch the place just like he’d done with Emily’s apartment. Or worse, that he was watching the place himself. “Come on, we should get back into the SUV.”

“Can I at least grab some fresh clothes?” she said.

“Sure,” he said.

He took in a deep breath once the three of them were secured in the vehicle. He made the call to the local police force, providing the K-9 unit’s contact number if they came up with any fingerprints or other evidence.

After disconnecting from the call, he turned toward Aubrey, who still appeared agitated. Her fingers were laced together tightly, and her mouth formed a hard line.

He didn’t have to ask her what she was thinking to know that she was ruminating on how violating the break-in was. Maybe if he could get her to focus on something else, he could pull her from her turmoil. “We are still faced with the problem of needing someplace private to look at those files again,” he said.

“Maybe it would be better if we just stayed in your vehicle,” she said.

“Sure, we can find a lot with some people around.” He patted her leg.
